Wireless headphones allow you to listen to music or podcasts anywhere, without the necessity of running an audio wire to your device. They are also a great choice for public transportation, at work, or at home.

Wireless over-ear headphones are available in a variety of styles and noise cancelling features. They are typically packaged in a stylish case.

Soundcore Q30

These over-ears are a major improvement over the Soundcore Life 2 of late-2018. They appear better and feel more durable and have a more polished appearance. The hinges are tighter, and the soft leather cups are a bit larger. They're still made of plastic, but they are more polished. You can also switch the 3.5mm cable for a better USB-C model to make use of them with stationary Hi-Fi systems and mobile Hi-Res players. They also come with dual built-in mics that worked well during our tests with FaceTime, Skype and Microsoft Teams calls.

The Soundcore app comes with a wide range of EQ presets, which can be customized and saved so you can listen to music or podcasts in your preferred style. The Soundcore app makes it easy to use and makes these headphones stand out.

The Q30's 40mm speaker effectively block nearly all ambient noise when ANC is enabled. This creates an extremely pleasant listening experience. The Q30's sound quality is natural, but it is a bit the treble. Some may not be a fan of the bass response (we got better results using the Bass Booster equalizer). This can be fixed easily by using the Soundcore App, which includes an eight-band Equalizer.

The headphones come with an power button and a pairing button on the left ear cup and a USB-C port for charging. The right ear cup features play/pause and the volume up and down buttons. Double-clicking these buttons lets you skip tracks or replay the previous one. They also come with the ability to speak which allows you to request to switch the mode or set an alarm. The right earcup can be covered with your hand to activate ambient mode, so that you can hear what's happening around you, without removing the headphones.

These headphones have a fantastic battery life. In our tests with ANC enabled the Q30 ran for almost an hour longer than the other headphones. This allows you to enjoy an extended flight or a long day at work. They can be quickly recharged using the USB-C cable included and you'll be able to see an alert when they're getting empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless are a set of premium over-ear headphones that feature active noise cancellation and Bluetooth playback. They're designed to be an elite high-end headphones that are ideal for listening to music and Bluetooth Head phones podcasts on the go, but sound fantastic when used for audiophile home use as well. The headphones are a bit more expensive than similar headphones, but their exceptional audio quality is what makes them stand out.

The Focal Bathys are packaged in a compact, slim and attractive, white, fabric-finished box that includes everything you'll need in. There's a fold-flat headphone carry case, USB-C to USB cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.

They're powered by a good 600mAh battery that can take you through a full day of listening to music and have an audio input for wired use. When connected wirelessly, they're paired via bluetooth wireless headphone and you'll be able to control their functions using an app (now called Focal and Naim likely in line with their English sister brand Naim's products for audio that are network-aware) or using the button that's on the left ear cup that scrolls between ANC profiles like'silent','soft' transparent', and full.

Utilizing the app, you are able to alter different settings, including the brightness of the LED, EQ presets including a'music profile' that sounds brighter and more neutral than the other ones and their battery duration. It also lets you to choose the ANC mode and the level, and also set an 'acoustic environment' which adjusts the sensitivity of your music to simulate what it would sound like when worn in a room with different acoustics.

The Focal Bathys feature an incredibly bass-rich profile that gives additional warmth, punch and impact to your most loved tracks. As a result, instruments and vocals are pushed back into the mix, and can sound dull, while details like cymbals are slightly less prominent than you might expect on some other headphones. They're also not as effective in active noise cancellation when contrasted to other headphones with higher-end technology like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony headphones are renowned for their high-end quality and the WH1000XM5 headphones are no exception. It's located at the top end of the'mainstream' headphones for over-ear, and is slipping into the 'luxury lifestyle' area where the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc are a common sight. The XM5s are costly however, if you are able to get them, you won't find a better wireless over-ear headphones.

The XM5s come with features that make life easier for listeners and, in some instances, automate tasks that they'd otherwise have to deal with manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to near hi-res) is also included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This allows for streaming of high-quality audio at bitrates that are higher than standard bluetooth head phones. There's even a built-in microphone to allow making calls without hands.

The XM5 headphones are no different than the previous generation headphones from WH, in regards to noise cancellation. They're among the most efficient blootooth headphones to block out the constant drones found in underground and train carriages. The XM5s do a great job isolating listeners from the background noise of busy airports and streets also.

The sound quality is very good. The XM5s aren't as precise in the lower frequencies as the XM4, however, there's a more pronounced sense of clarity and openness, too. The bass on Rage Against the Machine’s Bullet in the Head shows the Sonys strength and clarity but without affecting the rest of the music. The XM5s are also able to deliver precise and tight bass notes in Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is great, with up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is on and 40 hours if it's off. This is more than enough to cover a weekend getaway or several days' heavy use.

The XM5s aren't waterproof or dust-proof. In fact, Sony recommends that you avoid sweating on them or take them out in the rain. This might not be a problem for everyone else however, for those who spend much time in the gym or live in a rainy region it could be a big issue.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphones over-ear with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. Apple created dynamic drivers measuring 40mm, with a neutral sound profile that focuses on mids and highs without going overboard. This makes them ideal for both music and movies. They also provide superior Bluetooth Head phones fidelity when compared to other headphones.

The headphones have a light design that is comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made out of memory foam that is covered in woven fabric, and they sit comfortably on the ears without placing pressure on the sides of the face. Ear cups can be rotated and tilted to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges have a strong but not too powerful clamping force, which ensures that the ear cups stay in place during listening sessions.

A small button at the the right earcup lets you toggle noise cancelling modes. There's also a pushable, like a jog-dial, similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to adjust the volume and press it once twice or three times to control playback. Pressing and holding the button will activate Siri. The buttons are well-placed and simple to use, however I was disappointed that there wasn't an option to turn off the headphones when they're not in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode when they are removed from your ears or placed in their case. They only wake up when you slide them over your head again.

Spatial audio is a cool feature. It makes use of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and iPhones and iPads to determine where you are moving. Then, it repositions the sounds to make them appear to originate from that particular location. This gives you a theater-like experience with videos and movies made in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. Only iOS devices are able to listen to audio in spatial format.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd be somewhat smug walking into an Apple Store and spending $549 on the headphones if I knew they'd be outdone in a year by the new model. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and a better battery performance, making it difficult to justify the additional expense for most people.
