When ANC is on, the Q30's 40mm drivers effectively cut out almost all ambient noise and make for an extremely pleasant listening experience. They have a natural sound profile that leans a little on the treble side, which some may find lacking in bass response (we have had better results using the Bass Booster equalizer). You can fix this easily using the Soundcore App, which has an 8-band Equalizer.

These headphones have a power button and pairing button on the left earcup and a USB-C port for charging. The right earcup has buttons for volume up/down, play/pause and volume up/down. Using the app allows you to alter various settings such as the LED brightness and EQ presets, including a "music profile' that sounds more neutral and brighter than the other ones and their battery duration. You can also select the ANC level and mode and select an 'acoustic environment setting to alter the sensitivity in order to simulate the sound of headphones in a different room.

The Focal Bathys come with an incredibly bass-rich sound that delivers extra energy, impact and warmth to your favourite tracks. The result is that instruments and vocals can sound muted, while details such as cymbals may be less prominent than other headphones. The headphones are also less effective at active noise cancellation when compared with other over-ears with higher-end technology, such as the Sony WH1000XM5 and Apple AirPods Max.

Sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s may not be as clear in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, there's a more pronounced sense of clarity and realism as well. For example, the bass track on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys' muscles with real force and definition without flattening the other elements. The XM5s also have the ability to deliver precise and tight bass notes on Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is also excellent, offering up to 30 hours of listening time with ANC active and 40 hours when it's off. This is more than enough for a weekend getaway or a few days of heavy use.

The only issue is that the XM5s do not have any dust or water resistance protection. In fact, Sony recommends that you not sweat on them or wear them out in the rain. This may not be a problem for some people, but it could prove a stumbling block for those who spends much of their time in the gym or lives in a city that is rainy.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of Wireless And Bluetooth Headphones headphones that fit over the ear equipped with Bluetooth technology and noise cancelling. They feature 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with an audio profile that is neutral and emphasizes the mids and highs while not going too loud at either end of the spectrum. They are great for movies and music. They also provide higher fidelity compared to other headphones.

The headphones have a light design that is comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made from memory foam covered in a woven fabric. They are comfortable to wear without pressing on the sides of the face. Ear cups can be rotated and tilted to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges have a strong but not too robust clamping force that ensures that the ear cups stay in place during listening sessions.

A small button at the the right earcup allows you to switch between noise cancelling modes. It also has a pushable Jog-dial-like button, akin to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to control volume and press once twice or three times for playback controls. Pressing and holding the button triggers Siri. These buttons are placed well and easy to use, but I would have liked an option to turn off the headphones when they're not in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode after being removed from your ear or placed in their case. They only come back on when you slide them over your head again.

Another feature that is quite cool is spatial audio, which uses the gyroscopes and accelerometers in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to figure out the direction you're going, and then repositions sound to appear as if they're coming from those locations. This creates a cinema-like experience for videos and movies recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. Only iOS devices are able to listen to audio in spatial format.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I would be a bit disappointed for spending $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the next-generation model will be better in the next year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and better battery performance, making it difficult to justify the additional cost for the majority of people.
